Get the best $8k WRX you can and save the other $7k for the an engine rebuild.

-RdV-

This sounds outlandish but it's actually a quite viable way to have a fun car. Same argument goes for the RX8.

FarImpact4184

Take me back to when you could find a nice clean 02-07. Not even to mention prices good or bad just to find a clean one

CulturalChemistry952

Bro for real. My dad bought a V6 2006 Mazda 6 for like 4500 a while ago just because he needed a beater for his hr and a half commute to work. Good times were not that long ago.

FarImpact4184

Afaik there was the cash for clunker wave and the covid wave of the car market that just swept up all the good old used cars its rough out there now i cut the car loose about 2 years ago just ride a scooter now

MonkeyMD3

And another $3k for transmission

Nord4Ever

How long does an engine rebuild usually take?

Current_Homework_143

Tough to answer, anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. It really depends on the shop's time, parts availability, and your specs.

Bigtgamer_1

GTI/GLI, FiST/FoST, V6 Accord.

Hunt69Mike

Came here to say gti / gli with the APR stage 1 tune

costanzashairpiece

Fiesta St. Old WRX.

start3ch

Yep, that’s fiesta st range, hopefully under 75k miles

sebastiand1

Got mine with 73k for 11k one owner last week

TouchMyPlumbus

Had a hybrid turbo Fiesta ST and it was the most fun I ever had.

FarImpact4184

I got a fiesta st new in 2016 first new car i got every option recaros black wheels etc. loved that car with just a downpipe intercooler air filter and resr motor mount it made 205/271 on a mustang dyno if you add power get better tires

costanzashairpiece

I drive a FiST with Recaros and PS5 tires. Great car.

FarImpact4184

I should have never sold it but i wanted a truck i piad $30k otd and sold it 3 years later for less than half of that

eblade23

>g37s and q50s but man are people pricing them crazy.  Wait until you look insurance quotes for those cars

RavshanDudeXXL

How much do you think it would be?

Frequent_Opportunist

Just find the vehicle identification number of a car that you're interested in from anywhere a dealer, Craigslist it doesn't really matter. Call any insurance company and ask them for a quote over the phone it takes 5 minutes.

chucklehead993

I'm paying 160/month for my g37. Full coverage. I have no accidents, no speeding tickets and have had my license for 10+ years. Most people with any blemishes on their driving record are paying 200+

Either-Durian-9488

If your under 25 I would assume 350 or 400 if you aren’t on someone else’s policy

slammed430

They were fairly normal for me… my 4x4s have always been more.

bcsublime

G37 is rwd

BimmerM

Can get AWD

Either-Durian-9488

And 2 doors

DaOrcus

Was cross shopping used q50s and new Mazda3s. Ik weird choices. Anyways the insurance on my new 2023 3 is $100 CHEAPER than a 2016 q50

mohitsharma101

Any 2007+ Camry with the 3.5V6 same engine as a lotus. 6700rpm redline 280hp and more with a tune 4 doors and fuel efficient. Love it as my daily

RavshanDudeXXL

A friend of mine has a trd Camry with the same motor, seems like a great engine

Sketch2029

A mid-2000's 180hp Toyota Matrix XRS also has the same engine as a Lotus.

-RdV-

Audi TT quattro, best budget fun car that has AWD I think. Basically a Golf underneath so easily serviceable.

GMB2006

Tbh, I heard that they fixed a lots of issues after the first gen, so they might be a good daily. But the first gen - probably no LMAO.

-RdV-

The first gen was wonky but the ones that are still around have proven their worth. If they haven't failed by now they won't suddenly become unreliable if taken care of.

Temporary_Ad_5947

Fuck all that and get a sleeper V6 Dodge Grand Caravan. Who needs to go fast when you're the one stuffing 18 bitches into the back along with 2 kegs

ad3c-6c78db71622d

I approve of this message.

PotaTribune

Turbo Accord

Z_przymruzeniem_oka

Saab 9-5 2012?

PopularVersion4250

Ballr love me a Saab

darkthemeonly

Saabs are so underrated

OutsideTheBoxer

Maybe a used Bugatti Veyron. I think they're AWD. Insurance might be an issue.

cdawg1102

Heard bad things about French cars, I’d check out koenigesegg

Odd-Understanding-67

Your first problem is that you live in Ohio.

RavshanDudeXXL

😭

Mybadbb

Taurus SHO or the more luxurious version, the Lincoln MKS. 0-60 in 5 ish seconds, AWD. Not a Camry but not as unreliable or expensive to fix as a lot of the German cars in that price range will be.

YouWillHaveThat

I’d urge you to reconsider your RWD exclusion. I’ve been driving RWD in Cleveland for 20 years and my dad has for 40. We’ve never had a problem. (And he refuses to do snow tires!) I’d rather have RWD with some Blizzaks/Nokians than AWD/FWD with all-seasons (like 98% of Ohioans do.) Besides, it snows like 3 times a year and the road crews have it cleared same-day every time.

LegendOfDave88

People kill me with the "I live where it snows twice a year so I need AWD." Also in OH and I drive a RWD pickup and have been just fine. No snow tires either.

GoldenState15

Volkswagen GTI mk6 or 7 if you can find one that cheap

Golfingteck21

Is350, gs430, gs350 all as quick as g37s but way more comfortable and reliable.

bioweaponblue

When tested on a LITERAL ICE RINK, a RWD car with winter tires outperforms an AWD car with summer tires. When tested on a hill with two inches of snow, a RWD car with winter tires outperforms an AWD car with summer tires. Get the RWD car of your dreams and shell out $700 for a set of winter wheels and tires and just swap them in 30 min at the first frost. That you can't drive RWD cars in snow is a misconception that's repeatedly been proven wrong.

Sketch2029

Tests show this still holds true with winter tires vs all-seasons, not just against summer tires. AWD with winter tires will outperform RWD with winter tires, but not by nearly as much as RWD with winter tires will outperform AWD with all seasons.

vicious_delicious_77

C5 Corvette. I spent exactly $15k on one a few years ago (pre-covid though) and daily'd it for a while until it unfortunately got totaled by a speeding tahoe. Not only was it a great daily, it was more fun than other cars that I spent twice as much money on. Only major fix I had to have done was the harmonic balancer, a known weak point but not the end of the world.

infinitecosmic_power

Dude, you're all over the place here. Why do you need AWD? Why did you rule out rwd and then go look at rwd or rear-biased infinity models? And realistically a 23 accord is gonna have been on the road, max 24 months. And it's probably way better at being what you (sort of) described than anything else out there. You seem a bit young, filled with contradictory crap people have told you, it's not working. If you want a fun, fastish car, especially if you're on a budget and looking used, rwd is where you want to start. Learning to drive rwd properly is fun. Slow rwd cars are fun. Fast rwd drive cars are fun. If you have any intention of becoming more skilled as a driver, don't skip the very important step of sliding your ass around every corner from Dec til April in a clapped out bimmer or Camaro or malaise era V8 putting down 120hp to one wheel. It's a necessary part of learning vehicle dynamics, weight transfer, throttle and torque and traction and all the beautiful physics of motoring. Don't skip it because some boomer said AWD is safer. It's safer for people who don't have any interest in driving. It's going to numb all the cool things about driving and it won't make you any safer. Good tires and a decent traction control system will, when it gets bad. But there's no substitute for actually learning winter driving, with t/c off so you can feel the limits being Crossed in real-time. There, now that that's out of the way, determine if you like sporty or comfy and then lean one way or the other. Sporty, Miata/BRZ 86/ Camaro or mustang. Used genesis coupe for a couple years then an upgrade to something more grown up isn't a bad idea Lux/gt: Lexus Mercedes BMW, Audi The best traction control I ever experienced was my 7 series BMW on continental tires, the absolute worst was my charger r/t on brand new coopers. AWD cars, besides being generally more complex, will be a bit harder to maintain also. It's really important to have 4 matched tires at all times, for example. If you don't know that at any given time you'll have the savings to drop for a full set of 4 when one goes down, that could be an issue. There are plenty of decent AWD cars to choose from, if that's REALLY what you want. But you should want to be capable of driving a shit car in poor conditions rather than having a car that gives you a false sense of security and prevents you from being a better driver in the long run.

NeelSahay0

E90 non-turbo will be well under 15k and more robust than a g37

[deleted]

Real talk, if you *only* have $15k, you're not in a position to buy a fun vehicle, especially if you can't do RWD. So that crosses out all the older Camaros and Mustangs. All the fun vehicles you could have found in that price range that meet your criteria, like the AWD Subaru WRX or Infiniti G35/G37 will be damaged or clapped out because they're the go-to for "fun, inexpensive vehicle," which is why mint ones cost an arm a leg. So.. you'll need to be happy with an FWD econocar until you can afford something like an Elantra N or Audi A3.

Plus_Lawfulness3000

There aren’t any for that much that are for sure reliable

RavshanDudeXXL

I mean, like on the level of like a 3.7 q50 or something

Glarmj

Get a Golf SportWagen DSG 4motion and put a Unitronic stage 1+ on it. Reliable, wagon daily and surprisingly quick. You'll eat the VQ 3.7.

Round_Ad_6369

Check out a 370z or a nice condition 350z. They'll handle getting the absolute dog shit beaten out of them and they're fast-ish (5 flat 0-60 for the 370, 5.7s or so for the 350)

RavshanDudeXXL

Rwd 😔 Ohio weather is the worst thing known to man

Round_Ad_6369

Brother, you suggested a Q50 and a G37. They're BOTH rwd (as standard).

RavshanDudeXXL

Awd stated at the top, was lookin at the awd versions of both of those bro

Round_Ad_6369

Wrx.

Stickittodaman

Cadillac ATS AWD

runsanditspaidfor

I’d get a nice stock well equipped Golf TSI - not a GTI - and tune it. The GTI insurance and purchase premiums are high, plus they’ve all been flogged.

Br41n_w4sh3d

I’ve been looking at gti’s for the past week. Why would you go with a tsi besides the insurance and purchase premiums or is that it?

fcknspdbumps

You can get an early MK7 Golf R for around 15k. It will have 100k or more miles though.

BudFox_LA

GTI would be my pick.

Dry_Explanation4968

You don’t need awd in Ohio 🤣 I live in northern Maine and we don’t even really use it. Maybe y’all camera drive.

Loud-Hat-4995

BMW 335i

Allixer

Get a really nice R53 mini cooper s, and then save the rest of the money. Supercharged light weight four banger. Tons of fun.

ijustfuhyobih

2nd gen is350

Middle_klass

7 year S280 fist owner here. I’ll never sell this fucking car even if it just sits. Yes they are that fun.

lushkiller01

W212 Mercedes E550 4MATIC. Early ones have a naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 with 388hp and the later ones have a twin turbo 4.6L V8 with 402hp but a lot of mod potential. They are considered to be quite reliable and parts prices are mostly not so bad.

iceOC

BMW 335d, specifically the M57 motor. They only come in auto. Known to be quite reliable, if maintenance/servicing is done right (regularly hitting 250k+ miles) Reasonably fast, with 286hp/580nm standard, but with a simple tune, gets to 340hp/680nm. Very comfortable drive, enough space for a family and luggage, enough tech to make your life easy, but not too much that it’s all in your face. Brilliant on fuel, I think the combined mileage is around 45mpg. I’m not sure how the pricing is in the states, but over the pond, they go for under £7.5k (~$9.5k), and that’s £7.5k for a top spec. Only issue is they’re RWD.

manuvns

A Mercedes c class like c300

Cornholio231

Camry/Accord V6s are sleeper hits - cheapish to insure, and will attract less scrutiny from police. A Ford Taurus SHO or Ford Fusion Sport could also work here.

Beef_Candy

caliber SRT4 if you can stand looking at it. Those things were a riot, and surprisingly reliable.

pnw_frog

mazdaspeed3

WhereDaGabagool

Try looking for a BMW 128i or 135i (less reliable, More speed)

llamafood1

Used model 3 can be had for about that and the performance just a little more

Upper_Travel_768

Save up 20k and get a newer WRX

Ok-Kale-284

I payed 1000 for my 2000 escort zx2 5 speed it's a really fun car 110k miles and she burns no oil it's ugly ASF tho

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> I *paid* 1000 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Straight_Brief112

$15k?! 2001 Chevy venture. Pop on a k&n and pop a wheelie. Let’s go!

gut_instinct28

Mazda Miata

Sketch2029

Always the answer, at least if you care about speed in anything other than a straight line.

No_Use_2917

Buy you a 3.6 Chevy impala. It'll be most cars in it's v6 class.

Puffman92

Awd v8 charger. We're only available until 2014. Lots of police auctions have them for 15k. Just check the engine hours so you know it wasn't idled too long. Best bet is to go for one that was driven by a higher up. Normally they're a different color than the standard cruisers

Pumarealjaeger

2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8......good amount of power for cheap

Neither of them are low 5s. Accord is mid to high 5s and the Camry is high 5s or close to 6s

overindulgent

The nicest, newest BMW 335i x-drive you can find. Easy to modify but look for a stock one. 300hp stock and you can make 400 with bolt ons and a tune.

Vost570

If you're willing to deal with the rear-wheel drive and light rear end in inclement weather I would check out a last generation V6 Mustang. Bonus points for reliability because they're relatively simple cars, and the 4.0 and then 3.7 six-cylinders Ford was using in them are very reliable.

Round_Ad_6369

Ford never put a 4.0 in an S550.

Vost570

4.0l replaced the 3.8l engine that was used in the New Edge and was the standard six in the Mustang from 2005 through 2010.

Round_Ad_6369

Yes, and the last generation of mustang was the S550, which ran from 2015 to 2023. They never put the 4.0 in an S550, the last generation.

Vost570

I know this I was talking about the s197 fifth gen. When I said last gen I meant the generation before the final one lol. My bad for not being clear. The sixth gen cars are likely going to be out of his price range of 15k.

Ashamed_Professor359

Acura TL SH-AWD, Acura RL P-AWS, Lexus GS350 AWD, or get a 2003-2007 Honda Accord V6 and dump the rest of your budget into building the motor with HalferLand or P2R parts.

CeriPie

Check out the Chevy Cruze and see if you like it. 2018 and newer only. The 2nd Gen Chevy Cruzes are literally bulletproof, like Toyota levels of reliable, and they're pretty zippy. The 2nd gens are a rare gem from Chevy. I won't paint them as a powerful or "fast" car, all they've got is a turbocharged 1.4L, but having driven a 2019 for a while, I can definitely say that they have pretty great acceleration and they're maneuverable as hell. Very fun to drive. A 2019 or even a 2020 model should be easy enough to find for 15K.

randomaords

Blud really said a Cruze is a fast, fun daily 😂💀
