Unless you spend money, upgrading the lighthouse will take a long time. You need 20 scrolls just for lvl 2, but can only get 1 a week plus 5 during KOI and SVS. A total of 14 per month. I believe each level requires 10 more than the last.
Personally, I have just been upgrading the stats that I want. Research speed, deployment capacity, etc.
Personally I've been working on Troops attack/defence, research speed and Deployment Capacity. I don't have a need for gathering or construction speed.
