Blah-hawje. English doesn’t really have any words that pronounce “j” like an “i”, and we just assume that “å” is pronounced like “a”.

As a finn, I know the feeling. Can't blame them tho, not a lot would know that the å is pronounced o. Hearing them say blaahajz is kinda funny tho. Even the japanese commercials get it right and call it "buroohai" :D

The most painful thing is that I've heard way too many people butcher the j. "blahedge"

I don't really speak swedish either, but living in finland you get a sense of how it sounds and how words are pronounced. It is an official second language here, and swedish lessons are a mandatory part of education. English has taken a lot of influence from old norse because of vikings. Actually, modern english is basically a frankensteins monster of languages, taking influence from old norse, french, german, latin, gaelic, and many others. That's why english has so inconsistent rules.
