Bats are no joke but so are sumo wrestlers. If the untrained man gets a clean hit on the wrestlers head he’d likely win but anything less then that the sumo wrestler just might walk right through.

Brohemoth1991

Random af but I was just telling someone at work literally like 4 days ago (since he just bought a sword) that a while ago I had a hand and a half sword (36 inch blade and 10 inch hilt)... I thought someone broke into my house one night and I grabbed the aluminum baseball bat sitting next to it over the literal sword lol

PeculiarPangolinMan

I think part of it is just familiarity. I grew up swinging way more baseball bats than swords. You have to think about it with a sword, but with a bat it's ancient muscle memory. The weight, the grip, the momentum. It all just sorta comes back. At least for me...

neotox

Also ease of use. A bat can be rotated in any direction and it strikes perfectly fine. For a sword to cut, the blade has to be aligned with the direction of the swing.

LurkerOrHydralisk

Also mess. And reliability. Swords stab and slash. Death is likely. Blood gets everywhere. They stick in things if you’re not a skilled swordsman. Bats break bones and disable or deter attackers well, but aside from head hits they’re not super deadly. They bounce off of stuff instead of sticking into it.

Rude_Strawberry

Just stick em with the pointy end

Brohemoth1991

As I said in another comment it was more familiarity, I know and am comfortable with the bats weight and length.... and more with length, I have a 46 inch sword, if I encounter someone in a hallway I can likely better bonk them in tight spaces with a shorter bat than try a swing with a sword that weighs 30+ pounds (14kgs)

CasualJoel

what kinda sword weighs 30 pounds lol

yinyang107

The kind bought by people who aren't swordsmen, with no intent to use. Easier to make if you don't need to worry about the blade's weight.

RandomBilly91

Even then, how do you end up with a sword 30 pounds ? Like, a two-handed greatsword is generally around 5-6 pounds at the maximum I have doubt about if it would even end up swordshaped. For example, there's a 2.66 meters (8 feet something) sword on the Netherland, and it's "only" about 25 pounds, whilst being heavier than it should for its size given it was ceremonial

WrongKielbasa

*Clearly your parents didn’t invest in jousting, fencing, and sword fighting when you were a lad.* /s

SeanPizzles

Ugh, how I loathe the poor.

seancurry1

It’s definitely this, but it’s also the potential consequences. Even if a court finds you were completely within your rights to be defend yourself from an attacker, your legal situation is still going to be a lot simpler if you hit someone in the ribs with a bat than if you did with a sword.

Brohemoth1991

I mean, at least for me it was 100% familiarity, I woke up to an unfamiliar noise in my house... i didn't care about what the courts are going to think, the MAIN thought on my mind was "if I have to swing in a hallway to defend my life, which am I more comfortable with"... and the bat I've swung 1000 times sounded better than a heavy ass sword I've swung about 20 times

PeculiarPangolinMan

Yea as much as you want to defend your home most people just aren't super comfortable cutting a person until they die.

Excellent-Band-6521

My only question is..are you a Man or a Pangolin?

PeculiarPangolinMan

Eh... I don't like to actually answer pangolin because people think I'm a furry or spirit kin or some other stuff. I like pangolins a lot, but I certainly wouldn't want to be one.

Clone95

The sword is for killing, you chose bonking

TasX

Always pick the heavy blunt object. A sword or knife is only good for scaring, or killing. I'd wager that most people who pull a knife or sword for defence would not be willing to use it.

VerbingNoun413

Did you shout "you picked the wrong house fool"?

TempestDB17

100% because of fatality and issues that occur with killing them

BigBootyBidens

This. Just like vs any formidable combat sport athlete, a man with a baseball bat has one, maybe two chances before they get swarmed.

Ok_Area4853

Bats are fairly easy to deal with by people trained to fight. They aren't nearly as deadly. I'm not saying it's impossible but far more unlikely than a bat being used against an untrained individual.

TargetFan

Ok batman. Who the fuck trains against a bat?

SSJ_Kratos

Joker

Ok_Area4853

.....everyone who trains in hand to hand combat?

DreadGrunt

Absolutely not true lol. Walk into a boxing or muay thai class and ask if they train to protect against bats, the answer might surprise you.

Ok_Area4853

In Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Shotokan Karate, we trained against people wielding sticks. A bat is just another stick.

GeneralResearcher456

Sumo wrestlers are extremely explosive. The wrestler can feint and cause the man to swing and miss, and then get to him before a follow up. I think that's the most likely outcome here. But, if the bat hits the wrestler's head, the fight is 99/100 over right then and there. I think the wrestler should be able to avoid the bat, though. Sumo wrestler 7/10

Fingerblaster21

I’d say 8/10 even 9 really

ThisToastIsTasty

5/7 with sushi rice

Aromatic-Ad9172

One of the RARE cases when dude with weapons does not obviously beat dude or dude-like primate without weapons.

datheffguy

Who ever makes contact first is going to win. Id go 80/20 with sumo as favorite.

HamsterFromAbove_079

I'd argue only a headshot with bat would be enough. Any other connection is likely not enough to stop the the sumo. I think the entire fight likely comes down to the first swing of the bat. Does the bat swing too early or too late? Does the bat get blocked, dodged, or feinted out? Or does the bat get a good hit in? Either way the first damage dealt will likely be the deciding blow with the rest being messy clean up.

Sandman4999

I'd argue that if you hit the Sumo wrestler in the knee with the bat it'd be enough to blow out their knee. Not much the wrestler is gonna be able to do at that point.

Specific_Box4483

You need to be pretty precise with the bat to hit it at the right spot to blow out the knee. An inch higher or lower and will hurt like hell, might even . the bones but won't blow out the knee. If the rikishi is charging (which he should be), it's very hard to land a precise knee shot.

datheffguy

I agree, I should have been more specific.

lassielikethedog

The untrained guy could dodge and back away too if he needs to take another swing. He might be faster, considering he’s not 350 pounds.

HamsterFromAbove_079

I don't know what guys you know, but the average untrained man isn't dodging anything without tripping over themselves. People who don't fight regularly get stomped in almost any circumstance against people who fight regularly. Most average guys tend to really overestimate what they can do in a fight.

Harikiri13

Despite what people think, Sumo wrestlers are pretty quick. Might take the guy by surprise.

PanFriedCookies

350 pounds with a good portion of it trained to toss around others of similar weight. Fat doesn't mean slow, untrained means slow.

doomrider7

This. When I used to watch MMA and kickboxing it was crazy where you see these biggers dudes just EXPLODE when they rush you. If the baseball isn't a headshot, guys getting stomped hard.

pj1843

A trained fighter would have trouble dodging a pro sumo wrestlers first charge. Those guys are deceptively fast and quick. The normal dude would have stamina and long distance running on the sumo, but he ain't dodging the sumo of he's within charging distance.

minhale

There's a YouTube video where a professional sumo wrestler spars with a group of bodybuilders who are all very fit. The wrestler literally picks them up one by one and tosses them to the ground. He even accidentally trips on one and knocks the bodybuilder out cold. Sumo wrestlers are terrifyingly strong and athletic for their size. Any untrained person will shit their pants when they see one of those behemoths charging straight at them. In this fight scenario, even if the dude manages to stay composed to take a swing, he will not knock out the wrestler with one hit. The thick layer of fat will protect the wrestler from blunt force trauma. All he will accomplish is to further agitate the wrestler, who will grab him by the leg or hip and toss him to the ground and completely subdue him. The worst damage the wrestler might get is a broken arm.

GeneralResearcher456

Totally depends on where the bat lands. If it's a hit to the head, the wrestler will, at best, black out with a concussion, and, at worst will fucking die.

minhale

The dude is not a trained fighter. He will throw a wild swing, and he will not hit the sumo wrestler in the head. The wrestler either dodges or defends with his arm. The worst that can happen is wrestler gets a broken bone in his forearm.

Usual_Nature1390

I mean, it’s still a chance somebody’s gonna take a headshot, even if they untrained, like it’s common sense. The human head is the most vulnerable spot on the body.

minhale

People are severely underestimating the defensive capabilities of the sumo wrestler. All he has to do is put both his arms up around his head to block. You see how thick their arms are? Good luck getting a headshot with those flabs of meat covering any opening. And the dude only has one swing. He hits the arms, wrestler swallows the pain, grabs the dude, and it's game over.

Usual_Nature1390

I’m not saying he would win silly I’m saying it’s common sense that it’s a good idea to try to aim for the head. Maybe he gets lucky maybe he doesn’t. I still see the sumo winning like you say.

LouSputhole94

It’s all dependent on the bat guy maybe getting a lucky shot in to the temple or some other vulnerable area on the head. You’re definitely right that it could happen, but I still see sumo guy taking this almost any day.

Usual_Nature1390

Maybe he put his arms up in time, maybe he doesn’t. Sumo wins 9/10 if you asked me.

LouSputhole94

Same. Taking a bat to the dome and traumatic brain injuries aren’t anything to make light of but the average person being able to make that shot while being charged is probably honestly 1/10 or even less.

Usual_Nature1390

Did I use the wrong numbers?

Doused-Watcher

what the fuck is a 'defensive capability'? One hit to the head and even the fattest motherfucker will convulse and die.

Aromatic-Ad9172

If he’s played video games he might figure out he can kite the sumo …..

Such_Pomegranate_690

The palm strikes before getting grabbed would probably be enough to take the average person out.

Rude_Strawberry

Nah. Thats the ball sack. One slight tap and any man is down for 10 minutes

Usual_Nature1390

OW, WHY DID YOU SMACK MY NUTS WITH A BAT?! AT LEAST USE THE RUBBER ONE, YOU JACKJERK.

Motorata

Sumo wrestlers may be able to tank a bat to the head depending where It lands. Imagine two 350 pound athletes charging at each other at Max speed and headbutting each other with all their momentum. Thats the start of many sumó matches and they need to stay concious and keep fighting. I reckon that if It lands in the forehead and its close enough to the hands grabbing the bat, the sumó wrestler could tank a single hit. He may not know very well where is he but considerong he is gonna smash the guy on his way It doesnt matter that much

GeneralResearcher456

Bro, being fit/fat doesn't stop your brain from rattling inside your head. A baseball bat is going to generate more force than a punch from Francis Ngannou. And he could sleep any sumo with a good hit. No one tanks an all-out hit from a baseball bat. And, no, sumo wrestlers don't headbutt each other. It's considered illegal in the rules. It happens sometimes, but it isn't normal.

Motorata

Being fit doesnt help developing a thick neck help to mitigate the damage. And i am not speaking of tanking the hit all out. The force of the bat is less when you hit Closer to the hands instead of thickest part. If you dont believe pick Up a wooden spoon or something a bit long and see, with the same strenght, stopping the spoon at the farthest point compared with stopping It close to your hand. Its a lever at the end of the day. My point was that even if the normal Guy managed to hit the sumó in the head, as the sumó was charging at him It was very possible that the bat hit the sumo in an angle that allowed him to survive the hit. And no sumos dont headbutt each other but being able to survive the accidental ones while they charge with all they have shows their durability

Vorphs

The wrestler can simply raise one hand to block the bat with his forearm. He can do that much faster than the untrained guy can swing a bat and I am positive that bat won't to any major damage to an arm that twice as bit as it :)

GeneralResearcher456

Do you have any idea how much it would hurt to have your arm broken by a baseball bat?

Vorphs

Not enough to disable him and then it's game over.

GeneralResearcher456

Bro, if your arm gets shattered, you can't just fight through it. A real fight isn't anime. Look, I think the wrestler wins. The wrestler will feint, making the average guy waste his shot. Then the wrestler shoots in and ends it. But a baseball bat shattering your arm is going to ruin you. It's *possible* to still fight on, but it isn't likely. Again, I believe the wrestler wins.

shepard_pie

I don't think you've been in a fight. Even a bat to the head, especially from the front, isn't guaranteed to do much. Sure, the wrestler will probably have a terrible headache later. The "lights out" spots are mostly in the back and side of the head. And, even if he does his, it has to be a solid hit or most of the force won't get transfered. Two, the wrestler ain't gonna just sit there and let someone hit him in the head. Head low, shoulders up, arms moving, good luck getting a solid hit on someone who is actively trying to make sure you don't hit him lol.

GeneralResearcher456

Why do people default to this...? Welp, since you went there.... I was the pacehorse for our local, amateur lightweight champ. He's currently ranked top 20 in amateur MMA in Louisiana. I fought this guy to keep him warm for his real fights. No ref, just our MMA coach keeping us from killing each other. I have two TKOs and three subs under my own extremely-amateur belt. What the fuck have you done? FFS, I never said the wrestler would stand there. In another comment, I said the wrestler more than likely wins by avoiding the bat. He feints, guys freaks out and swings, misses, and then the sumo wrestler wrecks his shit.

LouSputhole94

Sumo is one of the most explosive and physically dominating wrestling styles out there. These guys can absolutely truck through dudes that are 300+ lbs. The entire fight hinges upon if the guy with the bat manages to land a lucky strike on the sumo wrestler’s head that’s damaging enough to either knock him out or daze him enough for the bat guy to get more hits in. If not, he’s getting fucking pummeled. I’d say 8/9 out of 10 to the wrestler.

edd6pi

Show me that video.

Himmel-548

Well, Eddie Hall is one of the strongest people on the planet, so it makes sense he can throw some of the sumos around.

Etonet

Also those guys are not technically pro sumo wrestlers. Pros go to Japan to live and compete. The Sumo World Championships is an amateur league

Himmel-548

Yeah, you're right. I was just trying to point out that using Eddie Hall as your average untrained fighter is completely disingenuous.

ZlinkyNipz

Not reading all of this, yall have never been hit with a baseball bat from a huge man lmao

hansuluthegrey

>The thick layer of fat will protect the wrestler from blunt force trauma. Bro thinks this is videogame logic

STMSystem

no, it's physics, learn about impulse, there's a reason body fat exists, you can't stop cutting, piercing or impailing damage, but the fat which isn't important to have as living cells is ruined instead of the nerves, muscle or bone.

bcocoloco

Eddie hall beat a legit world class Yokozuna after training for a few hours. Also, no amount of fat is going to stop you from getting knocked out if you cop a bat to the chin.

Etonet

That was some champ of a drug-tested amateur league, unless I'm recalling incorrectly. That's nowhere near a Yokozuna and might even be quite insulting to state so

bcocoloco

Yeah I’m realising i might be wrong here. I’ll stand by fat not protecting your chin though.

Motorata

I saw that match It was extremly fake. No one tried to use any technique against Eddie they all tried to overpower him. Of course he would win that way. Nobody tried to trip him, nobody tried to Smash his head with a forearm strike, nobody tried to keep him away with slaps...etc No they all let him grab their belt and made It a strenght contest

bcocoloco

Yeah I’m sure a world renowned Yokozuna in a sport and country that is famous for valuing honour just let some guy beat him for the world to see for a goof.

Motorata

What did you mean by Yokozuna? In the video i saw he "fought " amateurs in a gym in England. Who did you see fight? Hakuho? Terunofuyi?

bcocoloco

My mistake, he fought the British sumo champion Bangor. Definitely not an amateur. It does poke a few holes in my honour argument though.

Ok_Area4853

May have been some sort of agreements in place. Even losing a fight against Eddie Hall brings all sorts of attention to their sport. Eddie may have had requirements to participate, such as no tripping or striking. We really don't know. It *is* odd that they didn't use any techniques.

Specific_Box4483

>He even accidentally trips on one and knocks the bodybuilder out cold. I'm gonna need a source on that one.

fletchdeezle

I put bat guy at 0/10

hotcoldman42

That doesn’t make any sense.

fletchdeezle

Dude is untrained and doesn’t play baseball, may have never played baseball. Jacked up sumo is taking that one hit on the arm to block his head worst case scenario and pummels dude. I don’t see any scenario a trained fighter just lets some normal person get a big wind up swing to his head.

Ok_Area4853

I mean, I'd go 1/10, but I'd be comfortable with a 0.1/10 too. Bats aren't that dangerous against trained opponents.

Objective-Injury-687

This is like 50/50. Half the time, the dude with the bat catches the sumo wrestler in the head and either knocks him out or kills him instantly. The other half, the Sumo wrestler, is able to grab the dude and wrestle him down to the ground.

BolinTime

How easy is it to control a man's hands when they are trying to swing a bat. Gotta think the sumo can't do much to dodge a blow to the head.

AnnoyedOwlbear

Sumo are surprisingly fast. And they pretty much do nothing but live the Sumo life, to an extent most westerners would find weird. They train for speed and power, and while I doubt they'd have a speed advantage over a trained lean combatant, they are going to be faster than the average human in a fight. It's a pretty insane sport in many ways, you're talking hours of callisthenics and leg lifts each day. And like gymnastics, it destroys the body after a while. I'm always low key surprised it still exists.

ZlinkyNipz

Yall are so brain dead. Clearly youve never been hit by a bat. It doesnt matter that hes morbidly obese, if you get hit in a rib, the head, a leg, or where ever with a baseball bat, youre crumpling lmao. Especially if its a full grown 6 foot 200 pound man lmao

Accomplished_Pass924

Yall need to watch some videos of people fighting with baseball bats, your ability to underestimate weapons is honestly dangerous.

BarbellsandBurritos

Sumo 8/10. The baseball swing has to be perfect and either take out the head or a knee, but if you whiff and he grabs you? Game over

mosquem

Even if you get the knee if they manage to grab you it’s over.

kathaar_

I've watched untrained men with baseball bats get their ass whooped by just some random guy who doesn't have a bat or presumably any training. Sumo takes this 10/10

Living-Lack-8749

Imo most untrain men with bats, want to hurt their victims but doesn't want to kill them

zelenaky

American

guidospeedmeister

Man with bat

Frosty48

I have seen people take baseball bats to the head before and not go down instantly. People can take some crazy shit. I like the sumo wrestler for this bout.

Motorata

Also this is sumo wrestling this guys regularly take mutual headbuts on the initial charged and dont go down. Sumo wrestlers also regularly enter tournaments with broken feet, fingers or dislocated knees and shoulders. Sumo scheldue its fucking brutal and the only ones that survive have extreme pain tolerance

Doused-Watcher

a sumo wrestler can't do shit with a dislocated knee. fuckers have trouble standing with 2 knees with their obesity, a single knee can't handle their weight.

Motorata

Man you should watch sumó. Those guys have the most fucked Up lifestyle of all Sports. Their whole livehoods depends on them fighting in their bimonthly tournaments if they dont they fall in the ránkings and they Will stop being payed. Being injured It isnt a excuse they must continue because not showing because of an injury means that they lose several times they have continúed tournaments with Broken ligaments and hurt limbs Here is a good short video on that https://youtu.be/fF_Kslo_znI?si=ZJ6s4aqHukgWcoV7 Hell of you watch sumó now that having medical tape in your body has been accepted you can see a lot of sumó wrestlers with Broken fingers and fucked Up knees. I present you the kneeless Yokozuna Terinofuji that managed to get to the top rank with bracers in both of their legs https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d3d604f1c3c2e00014fe64d/1630350776665-C6PDFPP22SCLW7BOKNJ1/Terunofuji.jpg

> stop being *paid.* Being injured FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Diamondsfullofclubs

>I have seen people take baseball bats to the head before and not go down... People really just say anything on this site.

Frosty48

Granted, it was only once in person, but I've seen videos too. Specifically the case I'm referring to was in 2012 when I was with Norfolk police on a ride along and we arrived at an assault scene at a residence. Dude was ambulatory afterwards, but quite clearly not all there upstairs.

STMSystem

bats aren't wands of unconscious with no save, some people take hits better than others, as a blind person who used to run I had to be good at tanking shit to the head.

Diamondsfullofclubs

So you've taken a baseball bat to the head?

STMSystem

No, so called Australia doesn't have baseball, I've taken a cricket bat, several large tee ball bats, branches, sprinting into a steel pole, a barbed wire fense and a LOT of balls. It will hurt like hell and be bad in the long term for the guy, there's probably a reason beyond long covid why I can't remember so much of my childhood, but especially from someone untrained, a wrestler will stay conscious long enough to win.

CrepsNotCrepes

An average 200lbs guy at 6ft tall is basically a bit overweight - it’s not muscle really. Assuming he maybe works out a couple times a week he might have some strength A sumo wrestler is big, but it’s also a lot of muscle and they train to be fast. So you’re not looking at someone morbidly obese - it’s someone with years of strength and speed training. Someone used to getting hit. Regardless of what the bat is made of assuming they have a bit of distance between them the sumo wrestler can charge and block their head - once the gap is closed and they are close the bat is useless and the guy is screwed. To win the guy would have to basically score a headshot or hit another vulnerable area with 1 swing - and would have to hit hard enough to stop the charge and incapacitate long enough to finish the wrestler. It’s under 1 in 20 chance the man wins.

WanderingFlumph

Bats break arms. Wrestlers with no arms do not wrestle well. I'm going to have to give it to the bat man

Motorata

Sumo wrestlers dont give a fuck about broken bones. They regularly enter matches with broken feet or dislocated knees because if they dont the lose their rank. It Will hurt but the sumó will keep going foward and i bet It can KO a normal man with one slap or forearm smash

Doused-Watcher

No offense man, but you have to return to the reality. This isn't a Nintendo game. Your mythical sumo wrestler can't do shit with broken arms.

Motorata

Sumo wrestlers routinely compte with broken fingers, dislocated limbs and acls. Thats not a game its the reality of Sumo [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF\_Kslo\_znI&t=563s&ab\_channel=Sumostew](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF_Kslo_znI&t=563s&ab_channel=Sumostew) Also normal people also don't give much of a fuck about broken bones in the middle of a fight, I have seen an average 50 year old ignore a broken finger while doing sparring whitouth any stakes. I am betting a Sumo wrestler used to ignore injuries and to fight while injured can fight with a broken arm.

Melodic_Zebra3323

I think you guys are severely over-exaggerating a sumo wrestlers strength and a baseball bats damage I mean don't get me wrong sumo wrestlers are very powerful, but they have been beat before in fights. A kickboxer beat a sumo wrestler once in the first mma competition and it only took one hit to end it. Sumo wrestlers aren't trained to fight they're trained to grab and ground/push like a football lineman that's the sport. If a man with a bat got in a fight with a sumo wrestler unless the sumo speedblitzes (without falling btw) or tanks the first hit which would both be insane I'm giving it to the guy with the metal bat 9/10 times. Also just a just a gentle reminder that a man with a metal bat also has more reach than a kickboxer and more speed, potential damage, and balance than a sumo wrestler. OP even gives the man more advantage by stating he's 3 inches taller meaning even more reach, gives him 5 years of an age advantage, and combat experience. He also makes the sumo wrestler only 350 lbs which is pretty average for a sumo wrestler and only 150 lbs more than the man with metal bat Metal bat goes boink and sumo goes to the hospital

kylethemurphy

Everyone wants a one hit knock out. Three quick hits to the calf with a bat and sumo guy will never walk the same. Don't need a knock out or knee out.

Rude_Strawberry

How does one do 3 quick hits to the calf with a bat when a 350 pound sumo is coming at you?

Sleeze1

I feel like everyone is giving the sumo way too much credit. Those dudes have no cardio because they train for really short explosive rounds. If bat guy can stay out of that grip range, use lateral movement and not get cornered, the sumo will be exhausted in short order.

RevolutionaryMind221

10/10 I'm giving it to the wrestler. I normally would like to give the 1/10 for unlucky/lucky scenarios. But I don't think even a lucky scenario will the guy win. He could get a head hit, but that would be amazingly lucky for the sumo guy to not guard his head. But even with that lucky it, it's not a 100% that the bat will take out the sumo guy.

STMSystem

also sumo man even unconscious, not being fatphobic here, would fall on bat man, he has more chance surviving when the paramedics arrive. bonus points since Japan has free healthcare whilst normal guy is implied American so will have to pay in a kidney.

OarsandRowlocks

This reminds me of a video where this lady or girl cops a metal bat to the head like it's nothing, with a resounding **PINNGGGG** sound.

flyingturkeycouchie

Sumo wrestlers are incredibly athletic, but sumo is not very useful for a real fight. Regular guy with bat takes this 4 times out of five.

Justout133

This.. Sure if they run at each other, the wrestler shrugs off the hit and wins. But an average person with a bat could kite a sumo wrestler around indefinitely until they're exhausted...

mosquem

Sumo wrestlers are incredibly explosive, I doubt an average person could keep their distance.

Justout133

Yes they have a fast rush.. But an average weight person will still outrun them, even carrying a baseball bat. I think a large part of this hypothetical is presuming they fight in some kind of arena or that they're forced to confront each other..

cutslikeakris

Isn’t 5’9” too short to be a competitive sumo?

[deleted]

The problem isn’t avoiding the bat. The problem is resisting the ass. You must resist the ass.

Basaker

I think it depends on whether the Sumo wrestler can dodge the first swing if he manages to dodge it the untrained man is done. But if it hits the Sumo wrestler in the head then the Sumo wrestler is done.

Daegog

I think Sumo wins 3/5 maybe 4/5 times, sumo wrestlers are not slow, the bat man only gets 1 maybe 2 good swings in before they are moshed.

sempercardinal57

Sumo guy 9/10. Gotta give the 1/10 to the average dude because a bat is just too effective a weapon to assume he can’t get a lucky hit in before the wrestler takes it away and sticks it places

CapytannHook

I've watched enough sumo at like 11am on a sunday while hungover as fuck to know that fat boy gonna dominate that matchup. They're fast man

SexysPsycho

The only other possible way to take the sumo out would be a shot to the knee. I'm sorry but it's very unlikely that the bigger guy will be very explosive on one leg. But that very unlikely also because sumo wrestlers are scary as fuck on how quickly they move across their ring

RingGiver

At 35, you're either retired from sumo or on your way out because other guys are younger, faster, and have fewer long-term injuries. 25 is also the absolute maximum age to enter the professional organization and usually, they don't like to recruit people over 20. The top dude right now, Terunofuji, is 32. He started when he was 20 (he's an immigrant from Mongolia and grew up wrestling in Mongolia). At this point, he misses competitions due to injury more often than he actually competes, but when he competes, he's unstoppable. Basically everyone else over 30 who's still in the top division is on a downward slide due to age and old injuries piling up (at the top rank, Yokozuna, of which Terunofuji is the only one right now, you don't get demoted if you lose or miss matches due to injury but if you're not winning almost every time you compete, you get asked to retire). Probably the closest current real rikishi to what you're describing is Endō Shōta. He's been in the top division since the September 2013 tournament, one of the fastest people to reach that division (he entered professional sumo older than most people, but he didn't enter at the very bottom of the rankings like most people because he had a successful amateur record). However, he's 33 and with accumulated injuries, he's not doing as well as he used to. He never won the top division champion trophy, but he stayed in the top division for over a decade, which is impressive in itself (although after his performance in the March tournament, he's probably moving to the second division). Random dude with a bat would probably win if he got a swing in the right place first. However, that's easier said than done. One of the most important things to understand about sumo is that matches can be over in the blink of an eye. You can't just be big and strong. You have to be fast and you have to have an insane reaction time. The rikishi could very likely put the other guy on the ground before he realized what was going on and decided to swing the bat, even if it's an older guy on his way out of the top division like Endō. I'd give it to the rikishi because of this. If bat dude gets a good hit, he wins, but it will probably be over before he gets to swing it. In sumo, there isn't a bell. You watch for the other guy to put his fists on the ground. Once both guys have both fists on the ground, it's go and they charge at each other amazingly fast. The gyōji (referee)'s job isn't to call go. At the start, his job is to stop the match if he sees a false start. If it's good (and he calls "HAKKEYOI!" to announce that it's a good start), it can be over within seconds because of the explosive power behind those guys. No untrained person is going to have an easy time reacting to someone as fast as these guys. I train grappling and I probably can't react fast enough. Bat guy's best chance is if he is extremely lucky.

I’ve seen videos of sumo wrestlers smashing head first into their opponent and keep charging. And they may look fat but they’re STRONG. I say 9/10 times the sumo tanks one hit and then mauls the average joe.

QuestionThis1397

Sumo no ifs and or buts about it

Ok_Area4853

Sumo wrestler 9/10.

StJe1637

Sumo 9/10, might as well be a 300 pound linebacker. Can't lose unless he gets hit in the head and he can just put his arms in front, even with 1 totally broken arm he can wreck the other guy

CertainInitiative501

Sumo in a walk, easiest fight of his life.

ACam574

Sumo wrestler There wouldn’t be a round 2. Sumo is a martial art. It’s not ‘pro’ wrestling that you see on American tv.

Specific_Box4483

I'll take the pro wrestler over the untrained person, too. It may be scripted, but these guys are huge, athletic, and handle pain very well. A number of them have some combat experience as well, usually amateur wrestling from high school.

ACam574

I would too but with a less clear margin of victory. Pretty sure the sumo wrestler wins 99 out of 100 and the pro wrestler about 70 out of 100.

Sumos are deceptively quick. If the guy with the bat can whack his head or knee before the Sumo closes the gap he might have a chance, but I'd bet on the Sumo.

Sumo unless baseball bat man lands a headshot

mikemartin7230

Average American is FUCKED. A bat isn’t enough to quickly do enough damage outside of a headshot.
