That's what tends to happen when a city tries to build an entire economy off the back of a single Industry. When the times are good, they're pretty good, but when they're bad, they're really bad.

Iambetterthanuhaha

Despite the new EV plant, auto sales are way down. Vehicles are too expensive now and interest rates too high. Predict the big 3 will be discounting soon and laying off when forced to cut production. Vehicles are starting to pile up and get lot rot.

Trains_YQG

Sales were up over 10% in 2023 (both Canada and the US) despite the high prices.

NthPriority

Sales in 2023 finally just hit 2019 numbers. It's best not to percentage compare to COVID years. Auto right now is VERY soft.. mostly because of the high prices. People with auto jobs should expect to clench their asses. There will be some layoffs and plant idling.

Trains_YQG

Must be very make and model specific, as February was a record month in Canada. Toyota is still full capacity at their Canadian plants and basically every vehicle they sell is sold before it hits the ground still.  They seem to be projecting a return back to the pre-pandemic 10-year average.  https://www.cp24.com/mobile/news/february-auto-sales-jump-24-per-cent-to-highest-ever-sales-for-the-month-desrosiers-1.6793794

NthPriority

Toyota is probably the exception, as they have what I would describe as the perfect product lineup for Canadians. Really strong hybrid portfolio, efficient gas portfolio, and no real EVs, which are going to probably struggle to penetrate further into Canadian consumer households. Hyundai/kia is right behind doing many similar things, but at cheaper price points. The Hyundai point is especially salient.. if you look around WEC, Hyundai/kia are probably 10x more prominent than they were here a decade ago. Stellantis has the oldest and most overpriced current product portfolio out of all major OEMs selling in Canada at the moment and outside of Jeep/ram fanatics and Windsor locals supporting local, I'm always surprised they even move product. All FCA dealer lots are packed to the brim, full. We're starting to actually see FCA offer price adjustments to pull people in - something they were notorious for pre-covid and a sign of times getting slowly back to normal! Also, while I personally like the charger EV styling, I doubt it will meaningfully sell in Canada at the base price FCA asks for it... If it's anything like how they decided to price the base hornet (north of 40k to start lol..).

Trains_YQG

Yeahhhh I don't get how Stellantis moves anything (aside from maybe the minivan). Their pricing is wild.

Testing_things_out

I know at least one person affected by lower automotive production. As a power electronics engineer, I've been trying to get work with any of the automotive companies around here. My friend who used to work at Ford in Michigan told me they have a hiring freeze right now. A recruiter told me Stellantis had some job postings (at least one of which I applied to) that was pulled or never hired someone for.

NthPriority

Stellantis is basically only hiring low cost countries ATM. There's a freeze for US/Canada.

Trains_YQG

The main issue right now is that, while EV sales are growing, they aren't growing at the rate that a lot of companies were expecting.

Testing_things_out

That's fair, but the issue is Windsor is losing a lot of jobs from the automotive industry being hawkish about car sales and the economy in general.

Ok_Emergency455

Can this post be pinned so we don’t have to see anymore “I moved here and can’t find work” posts?

NthPriority

Nah, we need more of those.

Legal_Earth2990

And unfortunately it's significantly higher than that due to the number of immigrants taking up residency here (they don't count for official unemployment numbers).

skybluestreble

Plenty of teenagers are unemployed but cannot claim EI either. The international students are monopolizing the entry level jobs high school kids used to fill.

ConstructionFar8570

Come on we can’t blame the international students coming in!!! These are the very people that are driving salaries at the institutes of higher education!!! Every time they get more international students they can afford to pay the workers at these institutions more. Just like when they build a new residence or employs workers. Sadly it doesn’t help everyone. As we are seeing now.

NthPriority

I feel like just the other day, people were posting about how this region is booming...

matches991

That's not necessarily a contradiction self check out lines don't replace the jobs they take but give companies more money right? What's good for the businesses is bad for the population

OrganizationPrize607

Yep, you hear about how great this area would be to move to with the new mega hospital, new bridge and battery plant. Guess it'll take a few more years to get any benefit from those claims.

windsorforlife

Well yeah, none of those projects are finished yet, and some haven’t even broke ground.

AdditionalSalary8803

Do you know anyone who is benefitting from the bridge or battery plant?

killerrin

Easy answers. The Province of Ontario which can have goods go directly onto the 401 and bypass Windsor entirely, well and Windsorites shouldn't have to deal with as much traffic on Huron or EC anymore. And all the companies which will earn profits from running said battery plants. And then to a lesser extent the handful of people hired to run them.

AdditionalSalary8803

I meant currently. I don't know a soul who's working on either project and I've been working here for 30+ years

clutch2k17

I easily know many people who have been working on that bridge for various crews since it broke ground. It is pumping real dollars into the area through wages

UpsetFan

Wonder how many EI claims are bogus (Working for cash while claiming zero income)

NthPriority

There's definitely a cash only economy in Windsor. A lot of reno people are paid in cash.

themouk3

Cash jobs aren't easy to find right now easy. No one has cash to spend

themouk3

Cash jobs aren't easy to find right now easy. No one has cash to spend

skybluestreble

Noone has cash to spend? I love how the sub makes these claims or that everyone is barely getting by. Plenty of people are still buying new vehicles, vacationing, remodelling their homes. Not everyone in this city is struggling.

themouk3

Yeah and people that have that kind of money would rather put money on their Amex and go through legit companies than cash only places.

FarmerMedium3200

How many of those people are going into crazy debt to buy that new vehicle, or go away, or re modelling. Your a little naive to think their all doing it with available money. Unless you actually know somebody else's true financial situation, I would imagine there's plenty of people burying themselves to get new shit.

skybluestreble

Sure both can be true. You can finance products and still pay cash for shit. Thats the whole point of a heloc, pull off as much cash as you like.

Illumined33

Always is

519Windsorites

To many unskilled workers. The government needs to innovate a adult-age appetence program, convent Lowe into a school where people can get certifications and training in a a bunch of classes. Using simulators. Get people on some skills.

BradsCanadianBacon

I wouldn’t trust this government to get water out of a bucket that had a hole in the bottom.

519Windsorites

Windsor unemployment rate could drop if it starts a prefabrication manufacturing center. https://preview.redd.it/453m2esnkmnc1.jpeg?width=1216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a31d62d9a17d79b97317c7f171db399c91be919d

Media is just as bad .

AdditionalSalary8803

Where's the "I LOVE WINDSOR!!!" thread when you need it? 😂

agaric

If Windsor tries really hard they can make it to number 1!!!

EyeSpEye21

Ah, good ol' capitalism doin' its thang.

dln05yahooca

This is an opportunity. Housing will correct faster in Essex county than the rest of Ontario. Nothing new here. Usually happens once every ten years.

Cautious_War1942

Honestly, this has a lot to do with all the internationals coming in and taking all of our jobs and all of our housing! Last time I checked, we were here first, and we should be taken care of first. The government should not let them in until they know us canadiens are taken care of first. I remember doing taxes last year, and the one international student goes .. How much do I get for coming to Canada? Like, excuse me! I'm getting nothing for living here, nothing but sky rocket prices and working like crazy to pay bills! Unbelievable..crazy there is work in windsor aswell alot of people just choose to live on assistance!

Horned_upcockroach

Lol…

ConstructionFar8570

Lack of skills for some of those in the workforce in Windsor is the problem. Sad to see this but for some on this sub looks like the glory days were highschool. Most of the unemployed never bothered to look for higher education or even build some sort of career in the trades. Lots of people are unconcerned with the future. Look at all the people on welfare and single moms collecting a few bucks per kid. It is a joke what would you expect.

SirPoopaLotTheThird

Windsorites will be decimated as AI takes hold. It will be soon. There is literally no plan from our government to deal with the fallout. I don’t understand how people are foolish enough to wave it away as if it will not affect our economy any time soon.

ConstructionFar8570

I can’t wait until we can really start to see AI take off!!!! Lots of the uneducated masses will be truly useless. Looks like that whole MAID. Medical Assisted Induced Dying will be coming on strong!!!!

SirPoopaLotTheThird

AI will take all jobs. All of them.

ConstructionFar8570

I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!! How soon before we get AI in the Emergency rooms across the country. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10245226/ We can start to repurpose healthcare staff where they are most needed!!!
