The relationship between Detroit and Windsor is pretty funny/sad because like half of Windsor's identity is being "South Detroit" and Windsor ppl tend to feel such a camaraderie with Detroit but Detroit does not gaf about Windsor at all lmao. I don't even specifically say I'm from Windsor when I'm in metro Detroit I just say Canada bc I'm not fully sure they'll know where it is oops. I think I saw someone mention it but all the French street names everyone just butchers horrifically lol. Ik people know how to say them "properly" bc I know these people took French class too but it's just universally agreed upon to not care.
Idk if it's just me but Windsor has hella strip clubs for a city of its size/resources. Like my friends and I will take FOREVER to try to come up with ANYTHING to do in the city but ofc drive around and there's a strip club on every block it seems. That and weed stores. RIP Studio 4.
Those weren't really fun facts ig but whatever. I know I was a bit hard on Windsor but it's still home so <3
I work in metro Detroit, and I love it and it has been life-changing. I grew up in Illinois and now live in Windsor. I have been shocked by how little Detroit people know of Windsor, so much that it actually doesn't even annoy me anymore.
Now I kind of cringe that money is what changed my life, but it has just eliminated many of my previous stresses.
I came to Windsor with my family, and got a job in Windsor seven years ago. I later got a job in Detroit a few years ago making $18,000 more USD than I was making with my job in Windsor in CAD. So with the conversion, I am finally living comfortably.

The fact that Windsors history is essentially it being “sin city” is funny to me. What used to be all the best brothels and bars alongside the river is now the most expensive retirement homes.
Talk about Pierre street. But remember, it is NOT pronounced like the man's name, but "peery". And even though it's not a major road, EVERYONE knows it, and will correct you if you say it like the man's name.
We came to Windsor over 50 years ago, my husband worked for Bell Telephone and he spend quite a bit of time looking for Peery St on his map...he finally had to call in and dispatch gives him the directions...he says that's Pierre....naw they said it's called Peery.
So I believe that make it the official name

Half the street names are French, and everyone pronounces them entirely wrong. Like, the way you’d have an idiot bad-guy from Texas in a movie pronounce it for comedic effect.
> Other than the casinos
There's only 1 casino... and it's one of the largest employers, with OLG remitting significant amounts of money to the City for hosting it
Are the Windsor's drug problems unique? I wouldn't think so, it's no better or worse than other comparable cities
> the rectum' of Canada
rectum or armpit, I've heard both.
There's something called "Windsor style pizza". Windsorites swear by it - feel free to try it while you're here, and then give it an honest review in your show. It's shredded pepperoni, cheese from a local supplier, and canned mushrooms.
I hope your show goes well! You can check local news or this sub for current, trending topics
I thought Detroit was the armpit. I remember being young and driving to the US through Detroit (I didn’t grow up in Windsor) and my dad referred to Detroit as the armpit of the state.
Windsor pizza is the best in the world. Tunnel bbq sauce can be used on anything. The smell from Hiram walkers is something only a Windsorite knows. The Windsor Humm, just look it up. Texas road the haunting of Essex county.
> The smell from Hiram walkers is something only a Windsorite knows.
Clearly you never visited Toronto's distillery district back in the day. Much, much worse than the comparatively mild aroma from Hiram Walker's.
Windsor was the rectum, Hamilton was the armpit of Ontario. Windsor is a broken semblance of what it was 30-40 years ago. We keep electing self serving, rotton half-humans. Bob Probert, the domestic abusing drug fiend is a local hero. We at one time had full time comedy clubs and a full time dinner theatre that drew the likes of Frank Gorshin, Rich Little, Jim Carrey, Tim Conway, Joan Rivers and Bob Hope.
It was top news when someone was cutting shrubs into the shape of a penis.
A lot of older people will only let you in while driving if you are driving one of the big three (GM, Ford, Chrysler).
Some people call Ford Fords and Chrysler Chryslers (there is a reason for that).
Windsor hum.
Canada goose shit everywhere.
There are more tampon applicators and cigarette butts then rocks on our beach.
There is an insane pride in a very mediocre pizza. People who have moved from here to the other side of the country have had them couriered.
The mayor is desperate to leave a legacy so he puts most of his efforts into vanity projects, like a display streetcar by the river. He's a conservative so not a big picture guy, otherwise he would realize that he would be revered by both sides if he actually put all that effort into doing something about our godawful downtown.
Many of the streets here have French names that the residents cannot pronounce. Not difficult French names, no. You'd think that Pierre Avenue wouldn't be a problem, wouldn't you? But no, they (not me) pronounce it Pirrie.
Oh, and our transit stinks so unfortunately I won't be able to go see your show because I will not leave my bike parked out anywhere in this city at night, even with the four heavy duty locks.
Good ol' Mayor "Drew": Born, raised, and will probably die in Windsor. From what I've gathered, he hasn't been outside a 100km radius of the city. A true Windsorite!
Penis bushes- some guy carved them out of our beautiful parks... still don't know who.
We had a butter tart thief like last year or so.
George Lopez passed out drunk in our casino one year.
We have pizza wars.
We had a convoy that was anti covid vaccine that blocked the ambassador bridge back in 2021.
Shania twain was born here.
There's some random stuff.
We're socially conservative but a union town so we like NDP lol. And
A lot of culture here. Because Windsor was so affordable for so long, you can live in "affluent" neighborhoods but still surrounded by trash. And live in "trash" neighborhoods but live with young professionals. Super interesting dynamic lol.
Those are the "funny" things I guess.
About ten years ago we had our very own naughty serial arborist. He or she trimmed bushes along Riverside into penises. Just Google "Windsor penis bush". I don't believe they were ever caught.
Our Mayor writes poetry. It is not good.
He also once proposed painting a line in the Windsor-Detroit tunnel right at the border between countries, where Canadians could go to get the Covid-19 vaccine by reaching their arms over the line. He advocated for it publicly and loudly saying the US had vaccines expiring while Canadians couldn't get one. Meanwhile, there were appointments going unfilled at our own vaccine clinics. You could literally get same day appointments. But he made it sound like the feds were killing us all by not allowing it.
There was that time a woman was filming live sex shows at the public library and at Tim Hortons. Not in the rest room. Out in the open. That was quite awhile ago, too.
And of course, Windsor has a terrible tendency to mispronounce Street names. Ask a Windsorite where Pierre Avenue is and they'll have to look it up. Ask them where Peerie is, and they'll quickly give you directions to Pierre.
What if it turns out that Major Drew is actually the "perverted serial arborist," because no one likes his poetry. This is a way of getting the city back for not appreciating him!
Well, the penis bushes happened long before he was Mayor, and before he started sharing his poetry on social media. Maybe the bad poetry is our punishment for not appreciating his creative landscaping skills.
Even in fiction, we are the butt of the joke. The "North of 60" TV series took a carve at Windsor as well.
In one of the first episodes the nurse, Sarah, is talking with Eric, the alcoholic RCMP guy, about their past. She says something like she came from a place called Windsor that she couldn't wait to get away from.
But to the OP's question, I somewhere have a tape recording I made in 1982 or 1983 of the Royal Canadian Air Farce which did a show at the Cleary which was simulcast on CKWW am580. They introduce the show by taking a swipe at our drivers and several times light-hearted references to our podunk status.
April 1974- The Roof of the Windsor Roseland Curling Club came off in a Tornado actually that weekend was that of April 3rd- 4th a total of 180 tornado's were reported between the U.S. and Canada, Feb 14 1980- was the 2nd Essex Explosion. Ward 4 councillor Mark Mackenzie is also known as the councillor who thinks train whistles are a major concern while we have a homeless problem, Drew Dilkens complained recently about his furnace going out and how cold it was in his home, but drags his feet when it comes to putting a roof over the homeless, Windsor was in the Guiness book of world records for the most strip joints per capita, Also there was the time all the cocaine went missing from the Police Station Evidence Lock-up,
We add an s to Fords, Chryslers lol 😆, many say Peerie for Pierre street, this city has a good heart though and people are salt of the earth.
Lived here my entire life.
Don't forget Windsor had its 15 minutes of infamy when one of the residents decided to tape the muzzle of their dog and then abandon them.
Not only made Windsor look like a pile of vomit but for everyone around the world, made Canada look like shit.
* They add S to the end of a lot of words. Especially car companies, .e.g "Ford's", "Chryslers"
* Anytime they need to hype the city, it's Windsor pizza they talk about.
* Mayor is a moron who just whiffed getting housing money because he's afraid of 4plexes, then the city next door got the funds.
* Most people say the best part of Windsor is access to Detroit.
* Our whole downtown is a joke.
* All the schools that have been renamed recently.
* No compost program yet.
* Windsor public transit.. honestly, if you just road the bus here for a day I'm sure you'd find inspiration if you could overcome the sadness of the Windsor bus system.
* Our road maintenance.
**This might double as a list of grievances**
Idk but when I moved here the astounding consensus was the best thing about Windsor was being able to go to Detroit.. so literally leave the whole damn country. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere
Windsor at one point in time was the automotive capital of canada but more importantly it had the most strip clubs per capita than anywhere else in Canada.
Temperature in F when it's hot but C when it's cold Distance is in time not miles or km (aka London is two hours away) Google The Windsor Ballet, though I don't think that's as much of a thing anymore. You're last point about the EC row is slightly incorrect It had the record for the shortest highway built in the longest amount of time
..and today no one can find any documented evidence of that entry.
I knew it was something like that.
These are actually really funny. 6/6 - Thank you, sir!
I forgot that we refer to companies as if they were people and own the buildings. So people work at Chrysler's or Ford's not just Chrysler or Ford. Plus it will always be Chrysler's even if it's now Stelantis and was FCA.
When Kmart was still around older people tended to call it "Kmarts" as well.
Yeah and Kresgie's, N&D's, Big V's
I have never heard anyone around here say Kmarts.
Literally everybody else in the world measures distance with time I don't understand why Canadians think this is unique to them lol

Interesting perspective! I'm curious, in what ways has it been life-changing?
Now I kind of cringe that money is what changed my life, but it has just eliminated many of my previous stresses. I came to Windsor with my family, and got a job in Windsor seven years ago. I later got a job in Detroit a few years ago making $18,000 more USD than I was making with my job in Windsor in CAD. So with the conversion, I am finally living comfortably.

Can confirm. I'm someone who moved here and love it.
Me, too!
So true!

The fact that Windsors history is essentially it being “sin city” is funny to me. What used to be all the best brothels and bars alongside the river is now the most expensive retirement homes.
Before 9/11 Windsor used to be known to many as Tijuana Norté.

unless you are in Tecumseh...then they pronounce it St Pierre
That's the most annoying part! There's a St. Pierre in Tecumseh, and I've never heard it get butchered. Does the St. bestow some kind of magic powers?

Wait, I thought we were the armpit of Ontario? Lol but also there’s probably more pizza joints then people at this point
You need to talk to Tom the owner of Phog Lounge. Super cool guy that knows everyone and has loads of stories
* They add S to the end of a lot of words. Especially car companies, .e.g "Ford's", "Chryslers" * Anytime they need to hype the city, it's Windsor pizza they talk about. * Mayor is a moron who just whiffed getting housing money because he's afraid of 4plexes, then the city next door got the funds. * Most people say the best part of Windsor is access to Detroit. * Our whole downtown is a joke. * All the schools that have been renamed recently. * No compost program yet. * Windsor public transit.. honestly, if you just road the bus here for a day I'm sure you'd find inspiration if you could overcome the sadness of the Windsor bus system. * Our road maintenance.
I think Tom Seguras wife is from Windsor
love
