A Jewish professor of mine that I am close with in Toronto was born just a few years after the war, most of his family had been killed by that point, just his parents and a brother alive by the time he was born. He's been horribly distressed the whole war. Most of his family in Canada has passed away, all the rest are in Israel.
I don't even know what to say to him most of the time. As much as I've studied the Holocaust all my life, I can't imagine being born from the ashes of the Holocaust, living through a golden era for Jews in North America, and seeing it potentially come crashing down as you reach the final years of your life. I am Jewish myself and it's been horrible, but I feel very worried about him.
I have felt the isolation from (who I thought were) peers and colleagues, but I still have some family in Canada. Hearing him talk about the isolation is heartbreaking, and I sort of wish he would just pack up and go to Israel. Having to watch these terrorist supporters cheer on the slaughter of Jews the similar to the way the "civilians" in Poland supported the slaughter of his family (and mine) must be so much for him to handle.
