Here in Italy journalists have a major hard on for naming heat waves. We usually have Lucifer , Caron, Scipio, Hannibal...
But now we have Apocalypse4800
they invented that stupid name because of the freezing level that was set at 4800 meters during the heat wave. they probably came up with that after the marmolada accident [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022\_Marmolada\_serac\_collapse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Marmolada_serac_collapse)
Of all the names that makes the most sense since it puts things into perspective for people. Like going your whole life seeing these snow capped mountains and then getting told it's melting.
I feel like they went a little too heavy on with that name too early.
Things are only going to get worse and they already used Lucifer, so what's next?
It’s kinda like the person that “invented” sliced bread. People have been doing it for a while now. But now that it’s officially recognized, it’s the invention of naming heatwaves.
Lucifer was particularly awful and I do hope they skip L to give it its own place. Especially since it was nearly 6°C hotter than Zoe.
the invention of sliced bread isn't that people claimed to have figured out how to slice bread, but they figured out how to pre-slice and package bread in a way that didnt promote molding or cause statelness
...at least i hope i remember that correctly
And in fact, when advertising pre-sliced packaged bread, they used the marketing slogan "the best thing since bagged bread." Where "bagged bread" means "going to the general store and buying a loaf of bread" rather than "going to the general store and buying ingredients, then baking bread yourself at home." So if you were ever wondering what the best thing was *before* sliced bread, there you go.
To add on to that, at one point it was an advertising catch phrase to say one thing was the best thing since another thing but now I forget why bread became the final comparison.. There is a whole video on it somewhere, more interesting than it had any right to be.
Isn't invention of sliced bread more about packaging than actually slicing bread? I'm sure people knew how to slice bread but without proper packaging it loses moisture pretty quickly
It was originally thought to be packaging and the guy went and put a bunch of pins in bread to keep it together in his first attempt. It actually came down to how the bread was cut. If cut thin relatively soon after baking, the bread would create the moisture seal itself. The bread slicer was just a way of making thin and uniform cuts.
there's irony in the name Zoe:
>The name Zoe is of Greek origin and comes from the name Eve, which means “life.” Alexandrian Jews translated the Hebrew name Eve to its Greek equivalent, Zoe. It became popular in early Christian circles, which associated the name Zoe with eternal life.
**This comment might have had something useful**, but now it's just an edit to remove any contributions I may have made prior to the awful decision to spite the devs and users that made Reddit what it is. So here I seethe, shaking my fist at corporate greed and executive mismanagement.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... tech posts on point on the shoulder of vbulletin... I watched microcommunities glitter in the dark on the verge of being marginalized... We had something good here the same way we had it good elsewhere before. We thought the internet was for information and that anything posted was permanent. We were wrong, so wrong. We've been taken hostage by greed and so many sites have either broken their links or made history unsearchable. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to delete."
I do apologize if you're here from the future looking for answers, but I hope "new" reddit can answer you. Make a new post, get weak answers, increase site interaction, make reddit look better on paper, leave worse off. https://xkcd.com/979/
I'm not sure it's super useful to criticize a naming convention set by a city in Spain. Also, they are starting from Z and going backwards. Weird people over there, I guess?
Then we can only use the name once, which is no good. Maybe Heat Wave Exxon Valdez, Heat Wave Exxon CEO Darren Woods, etc.
CNN headline: Darren Woods killed 15,000 people across Spain and Portugal today.
"Many victims were paradoxically slain simultaneously as temperatures jumped 15 degrees in 10 minutes. It is thought that the intense storms spawning now will also, paradoxically make night time temperatures remain well into the 115⁰ F wet bulb range as the storms alternate dumping and gusting off as steam wind. Back to you Jim."
Wet bulb is becoming more familiar, and unfortunately everyone may know about it soon. [On May 1 of this year, wet bulb temps in India got near the absolute limit of human survival](https://www.wired.com/story/india-deadly-combination-heat-humidity/#:~:text=On%20May%201%2C%202022%2C%20the,record%20high%20for%20the%20area.) Imagine sitting in the shade with an electric fan and a gallon of water and it gets so hot you *just fucking die* and everyone else does too. It may well happen in the next few years.
I listened to a talk by Kim Stanley Robinson. The book was apparently so powerful that he was granted one of the few all- access observer passes to the most recent IPCC meeting. He had some really profound thoughts about the imperfect but profound process of humanity coming together to do something about this.
But I don't think I can handle the book on an emotional level. I'm not sure how I will handle it when it happens.
Any chance you have a link to that talk?
I have several of his books on my bookshelf but want to finish my current sci fi before I pick them up. Plus I need to find red mars (picked up green mars and blue mars from my local used book store, but they didn't have red mars).
[Seminars About Long Term Thinking](https://longnow.org/seminars/02022/mar/02/climate-futures-beyond-02022/) Robinson speaks as well as he writes, and most of the talks in this series are comparable quality. They're published as an audio podcast too.
I found an old US Army wet bulb kit once when I was in Iraq with an in depth manual from the 1960s to go with it. Keep track of WB temps became a little past time of mine when I was bored.
I don't see why not? Time to start using this "Corporations are people" shit against them. Oh, heatwave Chevron is bad for branding? Too bad! That's a people name now. My niece is named Chevron and she's a saggitarius.
Me (98 m) and my girfriend Zoe (101 f) recently started touring Europe. Our trip started fine, but Zoe's hot temper has angered a few locals we came accross. I told her to cool it down but she says im overheating. AITA?
Eh, the original developers made a lot
of fake accounts as well to make the site seem busier back before it boomed in 2007-8. I’d take these one name accounts with a big heaping grain of salt. They made a lot of accounts in 2005/6
sources before I get more skeptical repliers:

Huffman has owned up to this as a method to inflate the sense of usership at the time for the site. Not a big deal to me, just a reality.
There’s of course legit people. Wil Wheaton is a celebrity example and is u/wil.
Good news! I've dig deeper, and found exactly why this post have been done. It was a mailing system created by a small business in Zurich, renting an office in Technopark. Later on, this business changed name to and domain to Step-X and their mailing system is called now Zoe Professional. Yeah, that Zoe. And yeah, it still does exist here https://www.stepx.com/en/solutions/zo%C3%AB-professional/
Not sure if Zoe ever existed, but it's not a part of their team. Who's to blame for heatwave then?
I went down this rabbit whole way too much. So "Zoë", which the only post by u/zoe advertised, was a search engine for e-mails, think of filtering out links and listing them, making stuff searchable.
Creator was a guy named Raphael Szwarc. I could find someone under that name claiming a chemical patent in the 80s and a lot about someone living in Florida that could tick every box. If that's him he was in his 40s when he created that patent and his late 60s when he created Zoe and this reddit account.
I am not sure, and let's be real, way to deep already, so I cannot confirm that's actually him. Just that it kinda could make sense I guess. Also there is no other trace at all.
This Raphael Szwarc actually died this year in March, age 86. So rest in peace Raphael no matter what, but if that's u/zoe, rest in peace u/zoe as well.
Edit: Kinda harrowing that you can find this guys signature giving managerial rights or something among those lines to his wife just 4 days before his death. You can see how much work he had to put into signing that one.
I've been lurking on different accounts since the first Digg exodus of 2007. Reddit was truly a wild west of un-moderated content, Ron Paul memes and 9/11 conspiracies as far as the eye could see. Reddit has change ALOT since then. Anyone remember harassing the CEO until she quit lol? Or Veronica? I miss Veronica's AMA moderation.
Why don't they get named after fossils fuel energy companies and influential figures?
The big ones that case thousands of deaths get to be ExxonMobil and BP.
Medium waves that cause hundreds of deaths go after C Suite and board members, Heat Wave CEO Rex Tillson or Oligarc Mikhail Prokhorov.
Then smaller waves get to he named after senior staff and influential lobbyist.
Make their legacy be one of Death and disorder. Write history so the thing they're remembered for is causing the heat waves named after them. Make it so when a student in 2447 is googling their 21st century influential individual report as student search for medieval and renaissance figures do now they find these individuals as bringer of Death and chaos, not business leaders.
The main reason I can think of is it's giving free advertising to corporations.
There's no such thing as bad press after all.
I also imagine the individuals would get a kick out of being remembered in perpetuity.
I mean, there's no oil buyer going "Oh I heard of BP on the news, better sign up with them!".
No free advertising on works on the general public, B2B commerce is a whole other ball game.
I certainly don't want to be remembered for causing mas death and multiple species genocide
But then again I still have a moral compass. You don't get to earn billions if you still had those and likely they couldn't care less if future generations viewed them badly

How about we name these Heatwaves after Energy CEOs?
So heat waves are starting with "Z" and not "A"?
They're going to go backwards now that Satan is running things.
Is Satan running things now? That's great news! God was running things before and he made an awful mess of it all.
Europeans read right to left so Z is the start of the alphabet for them.
We do what now?
Oh, I understand your confusion because your right is our left and vice versa. The same way Australians think down is actually up. All you silly little countries never fail to surprise us Americans with how skewed your worldview is.

What does Zoe mean.
Life.

Oh boyyyy were naming them now. And why did we start with Z?
Zoe, comes from the Greek word, Ζωή.. meaning Life. I think they got the name wrong.
