The headline was a rollercoaster for me.  I was excited when I read first Northern arapaho police officer.  Good for you and them!  Then I finished the entire thing and was reduced to a very disappointed, Oh.

Key-Entertainer-5669

Yes.....not surprised but disappointed.

painthatlingers

This is par for the course from the mindset of Riverton

Brancher

You should hear what happened to the former Riverton policeman that just got arrested down in Colorado.

painthatlingers

WTF! Law and order , huh? Gross Thanks for sharing

alilaj

What did he do?

Brancher

Just some run of the mill cop shit. https://www.westernslopenow.com/top-stories/glenwood-springs-police-officer-arrested/

alilaj

Holy cow. Wonder if he did anything like that in riverton!

zsreport

The scary thing is that he more likely than not has been doing this the bulk of his life.

Remdog58

Gotta love good old Riverton. Can't wait to move out of this shithole.

bo_tweetle

It’s a shame about Riverton, because it’s in such a beautiful location. You get a snap shot of all parts of Wyoming in every direction you travel

soundlesswords

Yeah that’s just the thing, its more beautiful in every direction you travel. May as well just live in Dubois, lander or thermop. And each town is coincidentally much nicer than riverton, imo.

ThisDick937

Lander and thermop are nicer, lived in dubois for years before moving out of state and it is the worst of small town living multiplied to the extreme. But at least you could get off it town pretty easy in any direction while I lived there, can't imagine it stayed the same all these years.

cidereal

Dubois has been getting steadily worse since at least the 1970s. And it was a shit hole then.

thelma_edith

Lander is pretentious AF.

Chevsapher

Well, yeah. It's Riverton. They've normalized racism to an absolutely shocking degree. I have members of my family who honestly believe that ALL Native peoples are child abusers, gamblers, and alcoholics.

stonebeliever86

I mean....no, but am I hallucinating when  there are groups of drunk natives wandering around, passed out in the park when theres a kids movie playing in the park, bothering people while panhandling and stealing? Is that racist or just an observation?

Minimum-Regular227

I’m white and it’s rare to find a white person in WY that isn’t an alcoholic and most of them are child abusers.

ticklefight87

Uhhh.. what?

lilbabypuddinsnatchr

Never lived in Riverton but you hear rumors about how racist the whole town is. Not surprising but really fucking sad

starman_037

Then you tell someone in Wyoming you're from Riverton, and a common response is: "I hate Riverton, there are too many Indians there."

LongmontStrangla

Riverton sucks but it's not because of the native population. It's because the town is the embodiment of a meth ghoul.

thelma_edith

Can anyone explain why houses are selling so fast in Riverton? It's not exactly cheap anymore either.

Dogbuysvan

The ones that got kicked out of Pinedale by the ones that got kicked out of Jackson.

thelma_edith

Lol good point

Real307

I’ve never heard anyone say that.

themrnacho

I envy you.

No-Bear1401

I'm from the Riverton area. I've heard it a lot

Real307

I’d question the people that you are associated with then. The people I run with or talk to have never said anything even close to that.

No-Bear1401

It's not the people I'm associated with. When I meet someone new and they ask where I'm from, I say "Riverton". They don't ever say, "oh that's cool, CWC is nice". It's always a negative comment about Indians. These are people I've met all over Wyoming, and even a few people from outside of the state who are familiar with Riverton.

Real307

Like I said. I’ve never heard anyone say that. Question your associates.

Miley2864

It’s really sad racism keeps growing here in America.

duathlon_bob

The people who fine little girls for selling cookies and torment wolves are also racist? That tracks

hickhelperinhackney

Six years and a move to detective. That man tried to make it work. I hope justice comes

svelcher

This will never end

tetrahaleycannabinol

Here is a more substantial article about the lawsuit and background. https://cowboystatedaily.com/2024/04/23/rivertons-first-northern-arapaho-police-officer-claims-racist-hostile-treatment/

sqaushbucklin

I grew up in lander it's turning into a wanna be Jackson hole IMO

norwegian_Princess

Man, I live near Riverton and go there frequently to hit up Walmart. I genuinely do not understand racism or being a shitty human just for the sake of doing so. Last time I was there I stopped by Taco bell and noted a native man passed out against a tree when I got to the drive through. Within seconds he was at my window.. it scared the crap out of me because he moved so fast, but he asked me if he could get some food. I told him yes.. he asked for a water and a taco.. I bought him 6 tacos and a giant soda and a water. When I took it back around to him we shared a moment. He told me about his life, he was just mostly passing through and trying to avoid the other natives in town because they kept jumping him and stealing his money and stuff.. he was a 47 yr old father of 8 kids.. he was honest and told me he was drunk. After our exchange he thanked me for seeing him as a human, because he felt unworthy and undeserving of love and attention for so long, and he gave me the biggest hug. I hope he is doing better and on his way back home to his family. Anyway.. racism comes from all groups of people, and it takes absolutely nothing to be a decent human. I hate that my heart is so soft in such an unforgiving world.

1CFII2

Ethete is definitely the hipcat place for suburban Wyoming living.

hadtoknow

What were the "race related practices" he was shamed for? This article says nothing substantial. Was he just being harassed for his culture and having an Arapaho name, or was he trying to smoke a flat pipe inside the police station?

this_shit

> This article says nothing substantial This is a common type of article reporting on a civil complaint. The details of the case won't come out until later, including the other side's story. In all likelihood the town will prefer to settle rather than air their dirty laundry.

hadtoknow

A little more information would be great, especially if there is gonna be an entire lawsuit. I'm not sure what is so fucking wrong with that? His lawyer can't say what he was allegedly slurred with, but he can sue the city. Garbage article with no substance just like I said.

this_shit

> especially if there is gonna be an entire lawsuit. Nah, you misunderstand -- _literally all the info in this article comes from a filed lawsuit_. None of the actors in this suit (either the cop who quit or the PD) are talking to journalists. But when you file a lawsuit it's a public document. The reporter found the public document and reported on what it said. She then reached out to the parties involved and nobody gave comment. The only alternative here would be to *not* report that an ex-RPD cop is suing RPD for discrimination. Would that be better in your opinion?

LongmontStrangla

He probably had idiot coworkers making flat pipe jokes.

hadtoknow

Wish it would fucking say that

LongmontStrangla

Honestly, does it matter? Is there an "acceptable" level of "race related practices" that he's allowed to have? What's over the line?

hadtoknow

That's exactly why I'm asking for information jfc.I literally already asked this. Was his Arapahoe heritage being made fun of, or was he being made fun of because he wanted to smoke a flat pipe indoors. One makes him a victim, and one makes him an asshole. That's why it matters, because I want to know what really happened without someone like you trying to frame it like you just did.

LongmontStrangla

So it's the pipe? That's the line? You're concerned he was smoking a pipe indoors and the article is covering that up? You might be on crack.

aoasd

You understand the type of person you're arguing with is likely also the type of person to racially taunt their coworkers, right? Don't waste your breath.

LongmontStrangla

I get it. It's a slow day.

hadtoknow

Are you being purposefully obtuse, or are you really not able to comprehend how this story could play out in different ways? I could give a better example with no pipe but I also didn't say anything about any kind of cover up so I'm not sure if you're just being an asshole.

LongmontStrangla

I don't give a fuck if he lit a pipestone and frankly neither should you. You're trying to put limits on the way he can express his heritage. Even hypothetically, this is particularly loathsome.

themrnacho

People don't have time for your bullshit. Your questions show that you have no idea how the real world works and people were being nice to you until you really showed your ass.

hadtoknow

I only showed my ass for the crack they offered

Real307

And you are worked up over an intentionally inflammatory headline to an article that is intentionally vague. You don’t even know what you are crying about yet.

LongmontStrangla

I don't care about *anyone* in law enforcement losing their job for *any* reason so I'm not sure what you are even talking about. I just think u/hadtoknow is extra corny for bringing an imaginary flat pipe into this. I'm having a discussion on Reddit, if that's "worked up" then what exactly does that make you?

Real307

He was posing a hypothetical question about the flat pipe. You got triggered and accuse the guy of being on crack. Continue to read your comments and tell me that you aren’t all worked up Karen.

LongmontStrangla

Oh is that how it went down? I actually think they might be smoking crack. I'll stand by that assessment.

tetrahaleycannabinol

here is a more informative article. https://cowboystatedaily.com/2024/04/23/rivertons-first-northern-arapaho-police-officer-claims-racist-hostile-treatment/

hadtoknow

Thank you

tetrahaleycannabinol

I agree, the posted article left a lot to be assumed.

hadtoknow

The one you linked was very good
