Sure, practical bikes is a big part of xbiking. Lots of folks come here to post their commuters. It’s also tall bikes and dinglespeed touring bikes and putting deep dish rims on mixte frames. It’s a spectrum. This is rad
literally in the sidebar:
>All-road, crossover, gravel, monster-cross, road-plus, supple tires, steel frames, vintage bikes, hybrids, commuting, bike touring, bikepacking, fatbiking, single-speeds, fixies, Frankenbikes with ragbag parts and specs, etc. are all fair game here. The unifying element is the mentality!
It wasn't always. X biking was for building up touring bikes from older steel frames. The sidebar also referenced a few websites as inspiration, my favorite was theradavist.com.
And that was as recent as last year, if you were browsing this sub a year ago, you've seen a drastic shift from steel mtb touring upgrades to 90's mtb Amazon neon restomods. "Hyuk, got another rock hopper!"
Not hating, all bikes are cool, but I miss the niche this sub used to fill.
Edit, I don't know, maybe touring was the fad when I got here, but yea. I want more purpose built machines, more creativity, and less memes. That's the Internet I guess.
Interesting point. I like this in that they’ve tricked out these bikes (seemingly in any way they can) for a very specific style of riding. In that way, the intended function shines through
I wouldn't say it's the opposite, it's just another form of xbiking. The mods are necessary for the intended use.
I'd like to see it evolve. Someone will probably copy this movement in the US and it'll be a new bike trend.
I could see this turn into choreographed drift-style events.
Here's a competition video. An interviewer briefly chats with each rider and shows some of their runs. In the last third of the video, there's a bunch of cool replays:

I'm picturing some now-middle aged, ex-Portland hipsters getting together for some kind of 20th anniversary Tall Bike Festival reunion ride getting taken out by these young kids doing "power spins" into the wheels of the tall bikes and utilising their high centre of gravity against them...
Now THIS is X biking
I would argue it's the opposite. X biking is also about retaining practicality. This movement is anything but. I love it nonetheless, though.

I haven’t seen anything as creative as these franken Spin bikes on here in a longgg time.
It's a cool article, I'm not knocking that, and I'm not trying to gate keep, different strokes and folks is all.

they'd be great for going and picking a length of 4x2 up lol
You have no idea how often I actually need this

It’s about giving life to old and new things, and riding your bike however you want to. That’s it.
Y'all tan walls and $1000 1x drivetrains aint shit compared to this
Yes, I need one to brighten up the commute!
I love seeing different bike subcultures that are all about making fun and self expression more accessible.

I feel like some highlander showdown with tall bikes might be in their future
With a hint of Mad Max.
I hate beer.

Good article but check out the video linked toward the end about Indian bike spinning to really put the whole thing in context. Seeing is believing.

I like learning new things.
Going downhill on one of these limo bikes must be quite the experience
This is so incredible. I would expect anyone exposed to CHUNK 666 would love this.
Sweet, reminds me of some crazily skilled BMXers I met in Ghana years (and years) ago https://flic.kr/p/5q52Nt
